CALLINGTON Carnival is set to return to the town's streets in July, following a break of over ten years. The town's Rotary Club will be running the event with support from other organisations and help and advice from the Town Council. The first meeting of the newly formed carnival committee has been held and the date has been set for July 19 after the traditional Gala Day. Axed because of mounting legislation over a decade ago, the carnival's resurrection was the hope of Callington portreeve Denise Winfindale, when she first held office two years ago. 'We, as a town council could not run the event, so it was a case of getting people interested and someone to take it on,' she said. 'It's very early days and it will be subject to us complying with all the legislation and the farmers lending us their trailers.' She said people would not have the problem of acquiring insurance, because the event would be covered as a whole by the rotary club. 'We hope that over the years it will grow if we start off small this year,' said Mrs Winfindale. 'We will establish a wishlist of what people want to see in the future.' After the 6.30pm carnival procession, organisers are considering holding a barbecue in the park. Organisations involved include Callington Lions, the Prim Raf, the Town Band, New Outlook and the WI, along with help and advice from Callington Town Council. The committee is inviting clubs and organisations to register their interest. To do so, call the portreeve Denise Winfindale on 07866 249770.
