HATHERLEIGH Carnival President Richard Tidball said he was shocked but delighted to be invited to become president of the celebrated event: ?I think it is the one important event in Hatherleigh. I think it eclipses everything else in town. I am really looking forward to it.? Mr Tidball said he had been involved with the carnival for around 30 years. He was born in Sheepwash but married a Hatherleigh girl and had enjoyed the atmosphere of the carnival ever since. Mr Tidball said: ?We want people to get behind the event. It has been going for over 100 years and I certainly hope it will be going for a long time to come.? This year?s carnival queen Hannah Winser sold all of her carnival draw tickets helping to raise more than £800 for carnival funds. Hatherleigh Carnival takes place on Saturday, November 11. One of the most celebrated parts of the event is the lighting of the tar barrels which are then pulled through the centre of town.
