THE sun shone, the crowds came out and the number of entries was the best since the Callington Carnival was re-instated seven years ago.

Walking entries and floats packed Saltash Road Free Car Park while the strains of Dixieland jazz from Jumping Out Jazz entertained the assembled crowds.

This year, more than ever, the judges had a hard task in deciding who should receive the just rewards for all the obvious hard work that had gone into the planning, design and production of a brilliant set of costumes and back-drops. With a lot of head-scratching the trophies and certificates were allocated (see pages 20 and 37)

Carnival Committee Chairman Rick Lumley said: 'It was fantastic to see the community coming together, both in terms of producing amazing entries but also in supporting the event in such great numbers along the route.

'I hope that people are inspired to enter their own floats next year. Just like the Pallio in Sienna, it would be tremendous if different areas in the town would band together to build a communal entry for their part of town.'
