A YOUNG girl from West Devon who wanted to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake held an event which raised enough money to send out two ShelterBoxes.

Zara Pitts, 9, heard about the disaster at school and on the television and was so upset by it, she decided to do something to help. Together with her mother Dawn, sister Jasmin and support from family, friends and neighbours, the Bratton Clovelly youngster organised a sale in the parish hall, which raised £980.

Dawn Pitts was very proud of her daughter's achievements.

She said: 'She helped set up the sale, she manned a stall and didn't stop working right to the end. Like most children she's not that confident but at the end she thanked everyone who was there.'

The sale included face painting, cake stalls, bring and buy, an auction of items, cream teas and a raffle.

'She donated so many of her own things,' said Dawn, 'even new things that she'd got for Christmas and her birthday. She said "They need it more than I do." She was very generous.'

Dawn said Zara was pleased with the amount they raised: 'We thought if we could just get one ShelterBox it would be brilliant, but we were about £80 short of having enough for two, so some generous people donated the extra.'
