WORK is underway to improve the surface of the footpath beside the Tavistock Canal.

Local contractors are undertaking the work as part of the Tamar Valley AONB's Mining Heritage Project, and in partnership with South West Water. The improvements involve scraping off the accumulations of mud and leaves along the path that runs from Tavistock College to Lumburn, draining and resurfacing it where necessary.

Particular attention is being paid to tree roots along the path. These are therefore being cleared by hand to ensure the trees are conserved and roots remain undamaged. The work is expected to take ten days, and will allow its users to continue to enjoy the footpath all year round.

South West Water's technical support engineer, Ross Mitchell, said: 'We are always keen to work in partnership to develop and maintain valuable assets for the town and its community.'
