THE Ockment Community Centre in North Street is often the first port of call for people seeking information and advice, but the centre is now becoming a victim of its own success and is appealing for volunteer help.

The centre is so popular as a place to pick up leaflets and display posters that the shelves and racks are beginning to crumble under the weight.

?We just have so many leaflets and posters that we are fast running out of space,? said manager Lindsay Svensson. ?We think the solution might be for a volunteer to come in once a month to sort through any leaflets that might be out of date and put them in our recycling box. If anyone has an hour or so a month to spare, it would be great to see them,? she added.

As well as advice on paper the Ockment hosts various organisations that can give advice in person. The CAB, CVS, Homestart and Pinpoint Youth Counselling all have a permanent base at the centre, with other regular users, including Relate, GO 4 and Adult Learning.

The centre crèche enables parents of young children to access these services.

The centre also runs an internet café with ICT officer Geoff Mills on hand to help inexperienced and new users of the internet find their way around.

?We had a recent rush on booking cheap flights over the internet,? he said. ?Our computer centre is a great place to come and research hobbies, visit auction sites or learn how to e-mail your family and friends.?

Lottery funding also enables the centre to offer broadband internet access for a minimum charge.
