A 'TEMPORARY' building placed at Tavistock Primary 40 years ago may soon be given a new lease of life. The nursery and foundation stage unit has long been needing a re-furbishment, and a campaign has now begun to gain help and funds. Headteacher Lynnette Selbie has identified that something needs to be done — and lobbied local councillors and West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox for help. Mrs Selbie said: 'While at a meeting on Devon schools' funding, Mr Cox was there and I invited him to visit us to enlist support for the start of a campaign to get a re-build or re-furbishment for our unit. When he visited he said he was prepared to have a look. 'We are a state funded nursery. We know money is tight but we must start somewhere. 'It is going to cost hundreds of thousands but we can't keep covering over the cracks. We have put in new windows in that unit and painted it yellow to brighten it up but we need a new unit. 'We have outstanding practice inside the building but the fabric of the building is letting us down.' After the visit Mr Cox said: 'I was delighted to meet staff and pupils on my visit to Tavistock Primary School, which seems to be going from strength to strength. 'However, I shall be fully supporting the school's initiative to obtain better accommodation and facilities for the nursery and foundation unit, whose success has meant that the current outdated classrooms and play areas are increasingly unsuitable. 'I have already been in touch with Devon County Council and shall be meeting the schools' portfolio holder and the leader to discuss the issue shortly.'
