A hard-hitting campaign designed to show Devon's young drinkers how to enjoy the festive season without putting themselves at risk was launched this week. This is the first Christmas campaign specifically targeted at younger people to be run by the Safer Devon Partnership. A series of 20 posters has been produced, covering all aspects of social behaviour and situations and the dangers young people can face through irresponsible drinking. The campaign has the backing of Devon's licensees and nightclub owners and was launched at one of Exeter's most popular venues Time Piece. Speaking on behalf of the Safer Devon Partnership, chairman Alan Wooderson said: 'It would be naïve to run a campaign telling young people not to drink at all, so this is aimed at keeping them safe while they enjoy themselves. 'There is growing concern at the effects of excessive alcohol consumption on people's behaviour, health and well-being . 'This is a particular problem among younger people and can lead to violence, individuals being exploited or finding themselves in unsafe situations, and to serious and permanent damage to their health.' The campaign has the backing of the Police, South West Ambulance, Devon Fire and Rescue and the Devon Primary Care Trust and ties in with the agencies' work to promote sensible drinking. Posters will be displayed throughout the county at a wide range of venues, including licensed premises, youth clubs and leisure centres. A police spokesperson said: 'Officers on the streets deal with people who have drunk to excess. The police are pleased to back this campaign which covers all aspects of safety, which will decrease the likelihood of these people becoming victims of crime.'
