THE 'Down to Earth' production team and cast returned to Devon last week to film at Chagford for the second series of the popular drama.

The series — starring Pauline Quirke and Warren Clarke — has put the county on the map but due to the foot and mouth crisis the team has had to delay filming in the countryside.

Locations manager Manus Home said the first priority of the film crew was to be sensitive to the needs of the community and make their activities as inconspicuous as possible.

He said there had been ongoing discussions with MAFF, the NFU, police, Devon County Council and countryside organisations about using film locations in Devon.

An interior of a farmhouse at Cheriton Bishop, which is used as the family home in the series, has been recreated at a film studio in Twickenham whilst the foot and mouth crisis continues.

But the crew returned to the area and on Monday and a section of the C508 Sandy Park to Chagford road will be blocked off in two locations at different times in order for filming to take place.

Mr Home said the plan for the second series had been to use more locations in Devon such as Dartmoor and the South Hams to show the county in all its glory but that was when the tragedy of foot and mouth struck.

'Whilst it is an organisational nightmare for us it pales into insignificance against the the real tragedy which is unfolding for the local community,' he said.

The locations manager added that the support from the locals had been terrific throughout the filming of 'Down to Earth' especially the farmers.

Hatherleigh Market and Okehampton town centre were among the locations used in the last series and the crew have more recently been filming in Tavistock.

'Hopefully when this series is screened in the Autumn it will help to bring people back to the area,' he said.
