TWINNERS from parishes in and around Calstock welcomed 51 of their friends, young and old, from Saint-Thuriau for a weekend of festivities recently.
A break in the chilly weather on the Saturday encouraged many to visit local activities and the more adventurous explored further afield within the county.
A National Trust property and Callington’s Mayfest were two popular venues that did not disappoint and this was all before an evening meal followed by Scottish country dancing. Translating ‘Strip the Willow’ and ‘Gay Gordons’ dances certainly tested the hosts’ language skills – it was amazing what hand gestures could do.
Sunday heralded a beautiful sunny day; which was just as well as a picnic had been planned at Pentillie Castle followed by a treasure hunt within the stunning grounds. Just in case there was any spare energy left the Wreckers Morris Dancers gave a display and allowed the French visitors an opportunity to try a different form of dancing.
The French were determined not to be overwhelmed by all this English culture and gave an amusing rendition of a traditional French song accompanied by improvised costumes.
Come the ferry that evening there were many sore feet and exhausted mental faculties!
It will be the turn of Calstock residents to visit St Thuriau next May. If anyone is interested in expanding their horizons and enjoying themselves in the process, give Chris Granger a ring on 01822 832771.
