CALSTOCK Rowing Club were among the many teams on Sunday who took part in the Pendennis Regatta held at Durgan — a small hamlet on the Helford river near Falmouth.
There were clubs from all over Cornwall competing in 15 races varying from the U14s Cornish Randan in 15 foot skiffs (three rowers, two with single oars one rowing pair paddles and no cox) to the mens four oar (18 foot flashboats, four single oars and a cox).
Calstock's many junior rowers competed in all races and some of them in the senior as well. In the U14s four oar Calstock came second for the second time this season, the crew of Willow Harman, Becci Ives, Martha Roberts, Issie Edwards and Conor Clark (cox) only just losing out to Trelawney. who are based at Stithians Lake.
In the U16s boys four oar Calstock entered a young crew of David Scholes, Ben Bradley, Willow Harman, Harry Duddridge and Conor Clark (cox). They came in last but with many being well under 14 years old this is a crew for the future.
The U18s girls crew recorded their third win of the season - Daisy Roberts, Evie Reynolds, Rosie Bradley, Lorna Murray and Ben Bradley (cox) leaving all the other crews in their wake from start to finish.
In the U18s boys race the Calstock crew — Josh Lihou, Rob Cleveland, Tom Ransome, Josh Reynolds and Ben Bradley (cox) —did well to finish fourth.
The highlights of the senior racing were two second places for Calstock.
One in the senior mixed four oar where Ley Roberts, Rosie Bradley, Sam North, Ali Trotter and Ben Bradley (cox) were narrowly beaten by Polperro and chased hard by Saltash who finished just behind Calstock in third.
In the mens four oar the Calstock crew of Sam North, Ali Trotter, Conor Clark, Nick Bradley and Ben Bradley (cox) flew off the line and dropped both Polperro and Saltash in their wake. The stretch of river is tidal and the outside boat from Trelawney had the advantage on the first leg which they used to beat Calstock by three lengths; the East Cornwall team tried everything to pull the Trelawney boat back on the second leg but were beaten again by one length.
The next regatta is Trelawney at Stithians Lake on July 3.
n This years Calstock Regatta and fete will be on July 23 and 24 and promises to be a superb family day out.
