AN East Cornwall secondary school is celebrating after achieving a Centre of Excellence status — one of only 46 in the UK and the first in Cornwall.

Following the success in September of achieving the Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM), Callington Community College has now been awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark with Centre of Excellence status.

More than 371 SGQM awards have been presented since its launch in 2006, with only 46 centres awarded the Centre of Excellence status. Callington Community College was the first school in Cornwall to receive the award and to become a Centre of Excellence.

The Geography Association (GA) recognises that these hubs of excellence are pivotal to the GA’s desire to spread good practice through the development of local networks of teachers. In these schools geography is managed by enthusiastic curriculum leaders who are able to inspire their colleagues.

The Centre of Excellence award recognises the college’s contribution to disseminating quality approaches to the teaching of geography. The college was congratulated on running a Global Learning Programme training for primary teachers from the local feeder schools as it demonstrated its sharing of good practice in the local area.

Huw Pring, head of geography at the college, said: ’I am very proud of the students and staff in achieving the award. We have had a shared vision to gain this award and to be part of only a few schools that have achieved the Centre of Excellence means a lot to me.
