FEARS about the safety of a new roundabout built on the main approach road to Tavistock has sparked a letter to the county?s highways department. The roundabout has been built on the A386 between Bishopsmead and the Anderton Lane junction by housing developer Redrow. It will service a new housing estate being built in the area. Town councillors at their meeting last week heard there had been several small road traffic incidents involving the new roundabout since it had been built ? plus one major accident. Cllr Alison Clish-Green said several people had expressed concern about the roundabout, with regard to its signage, its alignment and lighting in the area. Cllr Clish-Green said: ?I think it?s probably within the remit of this council to ask the county to look at it again and ask them to double check everything.? Cllr Mandy Govier said she had ?grave concerns? about the roundabout, particularly once traffic on the construction site started using it. She had spoken to highways officers, who had assured her the roundabout did comply with regulations. ?I think if we actually wrote and got a reply in writing, we will have done our job as a concerned town council,? she said. Cllr David Best said he could easily imagine drivers getting into difficulties with the new roundabout. ?I think the warning signs need to be much further away,? he said. The council agreed the clerk should write to the county council, asking for assurances regarding the new roundabout?s alignment, lighting and signage.
