DRIVERS are being asked to take better care using a new mini roundabout on Plymouth Road in Tavistock after reports of cars going straight across or on the wrong side of the roundabout.

The police and Devon County Council traffic officers are appealing to the public to improve their behaviour at the site which was changed from a T-junction because of a poor accident rate.

Principal traffic engineer for the county council Paul Marshall said the road markings were being made more obvious to alert drivers that there was a roundabout ahead.

?With a new road layout like this it does take a little bit of time to settle down,? he said. ?We have raised the central island to a dome shape to give it more of a visual impact to approaching motorists, lining work is being finished off and a high skid resistant material which is a different colour to the road will be put in place.?

Mr Marshall said the latest visit to the site with the police had shown some improvement in driver behaviour.

As well as stopping the conflict of turning traffic, the new roundabout is expected to slow down the traffic along Plymouth Road and make it easier for people to access from Brook Lane where a new housing estate has been built.

Tavistock traffic warden David Chapple said drivers should take great caution as the access from Brook Lane did not have the best visibility to the right.

?It is all the more important that people do not drive straight across the roundabout ? if anyone is seen doing this action will be taken against them,? he said.
