PARENTS and governors of a West Devon primary are calling for traffic calming measures to be increased on the main road outside their school.

Concerns about the speed of cars on the B3362 were brought to the attention of a Devon County highways representative when he met the parents and governors of Milton Abbot School on Monday.

They want the 30mph speed limit sign for traffic entering the village from the Tavistock direction to be moved back by one fifth of a mile and countdown markers placed in the road. They also want the existing 30mph flashing warning sign in the village to be moved closer to the school.

Parent governor Maggie McCall said: 'It was felt by everyone that the 30mph sign was far too near the school to slow the traffic down in time before reaching the school.

'Parents wrote to Devon Highways and our local county councillor, Christine Marsh —due to the deluge of letters from worried parents, Cllr Marsh thought it was worthy of investigation,' said Maggie McCall.

The meeting with highways officer Michael Newcombe was arranged to coincide with the children leaving school so that the problem could be clearly seen.

'The meeting was very positive with several different options being discussed, although no promises were actually made as so many loopholes have to be jumped through first.' said Maggie McCall.
