MEMBERS of the Okehampton branch of the Devon Army Cadet Force will be able to make their voices heard even more easily in future, thanks to a boost from the town council. Members of the council this week heard that the cadets, who provide sport, outdoor training and community projects for young people in the area, were keen to acquire more sports equipment. A spokesman for Okehampton ACF told the council: ?The present level of sports equipment is very poor, a few bats and balls. ?Whilst the army sponsors the army cadet force, this money has to be expended on military training. ?Other associated matters, such as sports, Duke of Edinburgh?s award scheme and similar activities have to be funded privately, usually by cadets or sponsored contributions.? The spokesman asked the council to consider making a grant of £175 to Okehampton ACF to enable the group to buy a ?voice thrower?, to help them in the control of outdoor sports activities. The council agreed the sum of £175 should be paid to the cadets from the grants budget.
