OKEHAMPTON air cadets are appealing for the safe return of a go-kart, which they have spent the last 18 months building, after it was stolen from their training base on March 5.

The item, valued at £750, was days away from completion and was an engineering project being submitted for a BTEC aviation qualification. It was stolen from the locked shed at the back of the cadets premises in Tors Road.

Squadron leader of the Okehampton Air Training Corp Michelle Freeburn said the whole division was upset over the theft.

'Had it been in the main building, the alarm would have gone off but we kept it in the shed because of the nature of the job which is quite messy,' she said.

Michelle is hoping that once the thieves know how important the go-kart was maybe it will play on their conscience.

'We planned to use the go-kart for fundraising events later on,' she said. 'It's a pity we had not got around to painting air cadets all over it because it would have been a lot more conspicuous.'

The stolen item is blue with a yellow frame and red steering wheel. If anyone has any information regarding the theft they can call the squadron's base on 01837 55044 (Monday evenings) or Michelle on 01837 659080.
