TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club completed an important week in their year 2006 programme, with members and spectators able to watch both Wednesday?s visit by the president of Devon Bowling Association, Bernard Blatchford, and his six rink squad recruited from clubs across Devon, and the Tavistock Open Tournament which took place on Sunday. The president saw his teams travel home having achieved a convincing 142-85 victory over the Tavistock players, after winning four of the six rinks played. Tavistock?s two winning rinks were skip Vic Stacey and his squad of Clifford Hicks, Brian Lamb and Wallace Northey, who won 23-18, and skip Mike Allen who led his crew of Ernie Piper, David Perry and Ray Meneer to a narrow 23-21 victory. Losing skips were: Colin Tremaine (11-27), Der Saunders (31-9), Norman Paramor (16-24) and Ron Cooper (12-22). Sunday saw the Tavistock Open Tournament staged on the club green and involving 20 teams from across Devon and Cornwall, who were competing against each other for trophies and prize money. The competition winners came from the Maderia Club in Exmouth and were skipped by ex-Tavistock player Victor Doidge, who moved to Exmouth two years ago. A local Tavistock team led by skip Norman Paramor finished in fourth place. Earlier in the week both the ladies? section team and the men?s county trophy squad were in action with Tuesday evening seeing the Tavistock men?s county trophy team travel to face a strong New Plymouth squad on their Central Park green, and return soundly beaten (55-110) after losing on all four rinks played. The ladies? section had an equally tough encounter when they faced a strong squad from the Plymouth Sir Francis Drake Club in a home match that consisted of two league rinks and one friendly rink. The visitors won all three rinks, with Tavistock skip Sue Silcox losing 10-28, skip Betty Browse losing 21-24 and skip Hazel Lovell and her team on the friendly rink losing 28-8.
