YELVERTON Tennis Club's new committee under chairman Mary Downey have put together a diary of events, such as a Pimms Tournament, golf day and a treasure hunt quiz for the forthcoming season.

Memberships secretary, Jean Humphries is looking for new adult and junior members who would like to play social or competitive tennis and she can be contacted on 01752 267365. The club thanked Mags Berry, the outgoing secretary for all her hard work for several years.

Ann Short, who has been running the three ladies teams as ladies captain for 18 years has now handed over the reigns to Karen Gasche.

Matches began last week with mixed results. The Ladies A team lost 2-6 to Hill Lane A with Helen Smith and Angie Lynch picking up two points; the B team in division four made a positive start winning 6-2 against Hill Lane B. Ann Short and Rachel Driver won their matches with Wendy Sharland and Mags Berry helping to secure this win. The C team played Whiteford Road B in division five and won 7-4. Jean Humphries and Fiona Smart played as number one pair, with Lyn Macfarlane, back after injury partnering Carol Llewellyn.

The Mens' team opened their season in division five with a superb 8-1 win over St. Mellion B with a strong team of Phil Gasche, Simon Murray, Peter Smith and Charles Hattersley. Yelverton were also well represented at the recent awards presentation at Mannamead Tennis Club for the Winter League Competition 2010/2011. This was contested over six months by players from around the Plymouth District and there was a close finish in the ladies doubles, decided in the final week with Ann Short and Liz Parkes from Yelverton narrowly runners-up to the winners, Emma Duxbury and Sophie Murray from Mannamead.
