POLZEATH is a regular destination for beach-going Tavistock folk but there is a very special connection between the resort and the town’s longest-established estate agents.
Tom Balment was just 19 when he died trying to save his friend, Nick Woods, who had got into trouble when enjoying a day’s surfing in Polzeath. This terrible tragedy, in which both boys lost their lives, highlighted the need for greater education and safety on our beaches.
Tom’s parents, David and Sue Balment, have been avid fundraisers for Polzeath Surf Life Saving Club ever since. David was the managing director of Mansbridge Balment at that time and he and Sue continue to work to support the club to this day.
Over the course of the years these funds have helped the club to develop their new clubhouse and a further extension — exciting plans are in place for further development and improved facilities.
The monies have also helped the club to provide indoor winter training at the Wadebridge swimming pool on Sunday evenings.
A major addition to the equipment and ability of the club has been the acquisition of an inshore RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat), which enables far greater reach and cover.
Current MD of Mansbridge Balment Nick Henderson said at a presentation of a cheque by the firm in Wadebridge recently: ‘Each year David and I like to come and meet representatives of the club and chat through how things are progressing and talk about future plans.
‘It’s always great to catch up — we have a wonderful relationship with the team down here and are extremely proud of our association.
‘We will continue to explore new ways to help the club and build on these tremendous links.
‘Mansbridge Balment work throughout the year towards fundraising for the club but it is on Dickensian Evening, in Tavistock, when activity is at its most fervent!
‘Everyone mucks in and there is a complete party atmosphere in our office — anyone is welcome and we regularly see our friends from Polzeath on the night.’
