TWO bakery operations in Callington could soon merge into one — but the move could result in the loss of a small number of jobs.

Samworth Brothers announced last month that it was to merge the adjacent Tamar and Lynher bakery operations in Callington to create a new Savoury Pastry Centre of Excellence.

Joanne Milroy, group communications for Samworth Brothers, told the Times: ‘We believe this will create a stronger and sustainable business going forward with a larger scale bakery.

‘As part of the proposed consolidation plan we have entered into consultation with a small number of managerial and administration staff, whose roles may be at risk due to the consolidation of the sites.’

Staff at the sites were informed in November.

‘The consultation is continuing for the next few weeks and we are working with anyone involved to see if there are any other routes available across the group if that is possible.

‘We recognise this will be difficult news for some of our employees and we are committed to do everything we can to support those affected,’ added Miss Milroy.

Cornwall Council and Callington town councillor Andrew Long said: ‘I understand that this will be difficult for those who are affected and I have asked Cornwall Council to give me advice on what help we can provide people that are made redundant — we will give all the support that we can.

‘We understand that the business will be in a better situation with this change which will be good for the town.’

Samworth Brothers is a family run business, founded by George Samworth in 1896, and the owner of Cornish pasty maker Ginsters. Ginsters’ unit is based on the same industrial estate as the Tamar and Lynher bakery operations.
