BUS stops in Tavistock could soon be turned into money spinners, following a decision by town councillors at their meeting on Tuesday.
Members of the town?s properties committee heard that a company had approached the town clerk with a view to erecting advertising media along Market Road and on the town?s bus shelters.
Cllr Ted Sherrell said he had ?no great problem? with the idea of using bus shelters ? but he drew the line when it came to other council property being used for ?lurid? adverts and warned the council could become a ?hostage to fortune?.
Cllr Betty Batchelor was also concerned at the thought of advertising hoardings on council property.
But Cllr Peter Jones, chairman of the finance committee, backed the idea, and said the projected income of such a scheme, perhaps some £19,000, could not be ignored.
He said: ?One of the reasons I originally came to this town was because of the way it looked, but most bus shelters have advertisting these days. We have to consider this seriously. I think it might be worth looking into.?
Cllr Iain Andrews said the council could take out a 12-month contract initially, with the proviso that if complaints were received over the type of advertising the council could ask for it to be removed.
The committee agreed to investigate such a contract involving the town?s bus shelters ? its decision is due to be ratified by the full council at its meeting next week.
