TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club completed a disastrous week of bowls with Saturday?s trip to Paignton Bowling Club. The five rink match ended as a convincing 95-75 victory for the home side, after Tavistock won only one of the five rinks played. The one winning Tavistock rink was skipped by Vic Stacey, who led his squad of Val Southern, Marlene Paramor and Henry Lovell to a 24-11 victory. Skips Sue Silcox (16-18), Ernie Piper (14-25), Hazel Lovell (11-25) and Norman Paramor (10-16) all tasted defeat. Earlier in the week the men?s teams had lost both their Top Club contest against Unity Park and their Farley Trophy match against New Plymouth. Thursday saw the Ladies section League team facing a Civil Service squad for a two rink home league fixture which ended as a victory for the visitors, despite Tavistock skip Sue Silcox and her squad winning (17-12). The visitors won the second rink 28-9, to achieve a 45-21 victory. The friendly rink played alongside the league game also ended in defeat for the Tavistock ladies, who lost 11-25. Bere Alston provided the opposition for the Friday evening men?s County Trophy match at Tavistock. The game ended in a 69-75 victory for the visiting Bere Alston squad after they won two and drew one of the four rinks played. Tavistock skip Mike Allen and his crew of Vic Stacey, Wallace Northey and Barry Chappell were Tavistock?s only winners (20-15). Club members can now look forward to watching the Tavistock Open Tournament on Sunday (am and pm), when teams from across Devon and Cornwall will compete in a contest which offers good cash prizes to winners. Members of the public are welcome to come along and watch the games at no cost.
