A PARISH hall in West Devon is soon to have a brand new stage, thanks to a large contribution from a county councillor and dedicated fundraising by local residents.

Gulworthy Parish Hall's current stage is more than 70 years old. The stage is covered with bullet holes as it was used as a firing range by the American soldiers during the Second World War when they were stationed in the area before D-Day.

It is also badly affected by woodworm and rot.

The brand new 'demountable' stage cost a total of £6,100 — and thanks to the £1,600 raised from local residents and £4,500 given by Devon County Councillor Debo Sellis's local project fund, the new stage has been bought and paid for and awaiting delivery.

Cllr Sellis said: 'As the county councillor I have been very happy to support with both the locality budget and the Invest in Devon grant scheme since being elected in 2009.

'Gulworthy  Village Hall is used by the local school and local groups — a natural community hub!'

The new stage will allow short mat bowls to be played in the hall and allow different stage shows, including fashion shows and large music events.
