CHILDREN and staff from Gulworthy Primary recently welcomed a Kenyan headteacher to the school as part of a twinning exchange to extend cultural awareness. Joseph Ogodo is headteacher of 330 children at Nyawalo Primary School, 300km from Nairobi. He came to England with Gillian Urro, a teacher from Gulworthy School, who had been in Kenya a week previously, learning their ways of teaching. While he was in England, Mr Ogodo answered questions from the children, taught them African drumming, and took part in many visits within the community, including a special service in St Paul?s Church, Gulworthy, conducted by the Rev Michael Brierley. The exchange was made possible by a grant from the British Council to aid the teachings of cultural awareness. Will Hermon, headteacher of Gulworthy school, said this exchange had involved plenty of learning for the children in both schools. He said: ?It has been a worthwhile experience and it has been nice to bring the community together.? Next year both headteachers hope to get another grant from the British Council in order for two teachers from each school to exchange for a week.
