Duchy Knockout cup
Gunnislake 3
Saltash Churches 1
WITH their pitch waterlogged Gunnislake secretary Michael Kinger hastily rearranged the match to be played at Stoke Climsland.
Andy Brown made his Gunnislake debut and with Dean Martin they controlled the first half midfield battle.
At the turn around Gunnislake were two goals to the good following strikes by Matt Avery and Steff Kelly.
But with many other chances created the match should have been over as a contest.
In the second period lower league side Saltash continued to play with excellent spirit and with the slope in their favour their direct style caused a few problems for a Gunnislake side that seemed to have lost their way. Midway through the second period Simon Weir halved the deficit. This sparked Gunnislake into life and Avery crossed for Brown to head home and seal the result.
Cornwall Junior cup
Newmoor 1
Gunnislake 3
THIS was a physical encounter in which lower division Newmoor tried to unsettle their Duchy Premier opposition.
But the visitors more than matched their opponents in this department and ultimately produced the better football to run out deserved victors.
Visiting strikers Matt Avery and Andy Wakem had arguably their best matches this season and caused the home side problems throughout. From one such moment Gunnislake took the lead with a well taken Wakem finish midway through the half.
Lee Douglas, in for the cup tied Andy Brown, and Dean Martin came out on top in the midfield battle and from here the visitors pressed on in the second half.
On the hour mark Avery twisted and turned before being brought down in the penalty area for a cast iron spot kick that Staff Kelly coolly converted.
Wakem made it three nil with another well executed finish before the home side scored a late consolation when Andy Brenton was given no chance from the penalty spot.
Gunnislake return to Duchy Premier action this Saturday with a home match against Sticker, kick-off 2.30pm.
