Yelverton Bohemians firsts v Uplyme

THE Yelverton Bohemians' impressive form continued with a dominating victory against strugglers Uplyme.

Winning the toss, skipper Jez Stokes chose to bowl on a damp, sticky track. Iain Cunningham took two early wickets in another impressive and awkward opening spell. Colin Broughton bowled superbly for 10 overs without due reward, let down by a couple of dropped catches both off Uplyme's best player skipper Ash Caddy.

Caddy looked in dangerous form but should have gone before his accomplished innings of 48 ended.

With his dismissal, the Uplyme middle and lower order collapsed, with Stokes chipping in with three wickets to close the innings. But once again it was Geoff Brain (13-2-45-4) who ripped the heart out of the opposition line up. With six wickets at Ashburton, four at Whitchurch (including a hat-trick) and another four this week, Brain is riding the crest of a well-deserved wave. Always the team player, he is quick to play down his skill and achievements.

The Bohemians took on their target of 156 to win with real purpose in the face of some hostile bowling from Ash Caddy. Ian Loze batted with calm assurity but was unlucky not to stay with the ever confident Colin Broughton, keen to dominate another match for his team. This was to be his day. In the face of some tricky bowling, Broughton mixed defence with blistering attack to provide the backbone to the Bohemians' innings. He was joined by the impressive Pete Garland who helped Broughton to shift the momentum fully Yelverton's way.

When Garland fell with the score on 114, there was still work to do as the mist closed in. Ricky McDowell dug in and supported Broughton to a classy, dominating 95no, with some mighty sixes, big drives and clever running. This was a deserved Bohemians victory, bringing them 20 points and a step closer to promotion.
