A FOURTEEN year-old girl from Yelverton has become the youngest person in #the country to pass a GCSE in Archeology.

Briony Jones (pictured right) started delving into the past through the two-year course when she was just 12, and sat the exam when she was still 13.

Briony had to study after school and at weekends as the exam is not part of the school curriculum and is taken mainly by adults. She achieved a C grade in the subject and said she found the course 'interesting and a lot of fun'.

Briony sat two exams on archaeological techniques and facts and chose the Romans as her main study period. She also produced two projects to complete the course. She undertook field studies in the Stanlake area of Dartmoor between Yelverton and Princetown, the tinners' blowing house at Black Tor Falls and the Iron Age settlement and stone row.

The Young Archaeologists' Club has made Briony an honorary member following her achievements.

Briony said she had not decided if she would like to become an archaeologist. 'I'm not sure about a career yet but I'll keep my interest in archaeology up,' she said.

Devonport High School for Girls pupil Briony was encouraged to take her interest in archaeology further by her then headteacher at Kelly Junior School Richard Jeynes.
