YEAR six pupils at Mount House School received an in-depth view of the Pilgrim Fathers and their Plymouth connection in the old and new worlds by the chief executive of Destination Plymouth.

Amanda Lumley visited the children to talk about the Puritans, their voyage on the Mayflower and departure from Plymouth, life on Plimouth Plantation in Massachusetts as well as Destination Plymouth's plans for the 2020 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower.

The interactive event was a culmination of the pupils' history project on the subject. The youngsters had bee assigned real-life Mayflower immigrant characters and were asked to bring their voyage and experience in the new world to life.

Mrs Lumley talked of the background to the voyage, the construction of the Mayflower and the journey experience as well as the life and work of the Pilgrims once they reached their final destination of Plimouth Plantation.

The pupils saw video footage of the Plimouth Plantation living museum as well as an impressive array of artefacts from the Plymouth Museum.

Headmaster Patrick Savage expressed thanks to both Mrs Lumley and to Plymouth Museum for their participation in the presentation.

He said: 'This kind of presentation really brings history to life for pupils of all ages and we wish Destination Plymouth and Plymouth Museum all the best in their work preparing for the important events of 2020!'
