PUPILS of Tavistock Primary School enjoyed a history lesson with a difference when they visited the former home of their town?s most famous son ? Sir Francis Drake ? recently. The year one and two pupils, accompanied by teachers Heather Alexander, Laura Handel and Marie Bassett, had a busy day at the National Trust?s Buckland Abbey, near Yelverton, where they were learning about Sir Francis Drake as part of their topic on important people. The children were fascinated by all the extra information the National Trust staff were able to give them and they enjoyed showing off their knowledge as they toured the house. Jonathan Cummins, the visitor services manager, organised the trip for Tavistock Primary and the children and staff thanked him for all his hard work. Particular highlights and favourite activities for the children were walking through autumn leaves on the yellow route walk, playing in the grounds and ? most of all ?seeing the famous Drake?s Drum.
