I DON?T know who wrote the main story on the front of last week?s Times, but the Whitchurch rural gateway was not the reason that Horrabridge was jammed with traffic.
The main reason for this was the bridge at Horrabridge which was built before the advent of the motor car and not designed to carry the traffic that normally uses the A386.
Unfortunately, traffic calming is needed on our roads, a decision I reached last Saturday evening, when a car came so fast down the hill from Dousland to Walkhampton that it forced me into the hedge.
The accident last Thursday week would have jammed the roads around Horrabridge, with or without the gateway. Just look at the chaos when the road to Dousland from Woodmans Corner was closed for work on the water main. Walkhampton suffered the disruption for far longer than half a day.
Narrow country roads cause this, not the traffic calming.
