Bridestowe v Woodland Fort KNOWING that only a win against league leaders Woodland Fort would ensure Bridestowe?s promotion, the pressure was on from the start. The added complication was that third-placed Keyham were playing Shaldon and could leapfrog both Bridestowe and Woodland Fort with a 20-point win. Woodland Fort won the toss and put Bridestowe into bat on a drying wicket. Fogerty 33 and Barry Down made a steady start and Eddy Jones looked to be causing the Fort bowlers trouble when he was run out, having just hit his 50. At the other end of the batting order, Lee Jutson (10no) and S Drayner (1no) guided Bridestowe past the 150 mark for that vital bonus point, thus finishing on 157 for 9. P Merrifield (3- 31) and R Stone (3-38) were the pick of the Fort bowlers. After tea, Bridestowe took to the field in a determined manner to bowl at Woodland Fort and the opening batsmen were soon under pressure from Steve Drayner and Addy Griffiths, who were ably supported by captain Chris Lavis and Neil Griffiths at the first change. No Woodland Fort batsman was really allowed to settle and make runs. G Roberts scored 18, and Tibbs and Humphreys had 17 apiece. With three overs to go, Woodland Fort needed nine runs to win but were down to their last batsmen. Eddy Jones had joined the bowling and in the final over, with three balls to spare, the batsman gloved a catch to Fogerty the Bridestowe wicket keeper. Pick of the Bridestowe bowlers were: A Griffiths 2-19; N Griffiths 2-15; C Lavis 2-34; E Jones 3-26. Both Woodland Fort and Bridestowe gained promotion to Devon League D division for next season.
