CALSTOCK Arts continues to break new ground in its programming and has attracted a fascinating performance entitled War Correspondents presented by Helen Chadwick scheduled for this Saturday (May 7).

Following its full premier in 2014, which then was toured extensively, this piece of song theatre now has a new cast for this concert version.

It was jointly commissioned by the Greenwich and Docklands Festival, Sage Gateshead and New Writing North, supported by Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

War Correspondents was created by Helen Chadwick and Olivier Award winner, Steven Hoggett.

It is a performance based on interviews with journalists working in major conflict zones around the world, including with the UK’s Martin Bell.

It visits the conflicts in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, DRC, Iraq and Liberia.

Helen interviewed over 30 journalists including an Italian woman held hostage in Fallujah and a Georgian woman threatened with death in no-man’s-land during conflict in her own country.

It interweaves recordings of their stories with a song cycle performed on this occasion by a cast of singers/actors including Helen Chadwick, Rebecca Thorn, Shaun Chambers and Benedict Hastings.

After the show there will be a Q&A with the cast.

‘Chadwick’s songs provide the evening with its emotional layering ... it pays quiet tribute to those who do a job most of us wouldn’t do for a million quid. Without them, there would only be silence and lies’ said the Guardian.
