A SCHEME to build offices for West Devon Borough Council on the Riverside car park in Tavistock will not be proceeding, the council has announced.
The scheme, suggested by developer Brook Street Properties London Ltd, would have seen the existing office site at Kilworthy Park being used for housing with replacement offices being provided at the large Riverside car park, near Tavistock Meadows.
However, the council's policy and resources committee decided not to proceed with the scheme at its recent meeting.
Chairman of the committee Cllr Peter Hill said they had weighed all the factors 'very, very carefully'.
'At the end of the day we were not satisfied this was the right thing to be doing at the moment,' he said, adding that they were grateful to Brook Street Properties for their interest and enthusiasm.
Director of Brook Street Propties London Ltd Andrew Lopes, of Yelverton estate agents High Colton, said: 'We felt it was a good scheme, but obviously the council felt it wasn't quite right for them for various reasons'.
Borough and town councillor Ted Sherrell, in whose ward the car park lies, said he was pleased the council was not going to proceed with the plan.
'It would have taken up a vital parking area and the whole enterprise had no benefit or value to the community and the council tax payers of Tavistock and West Devon as far as I could see,' he said.
