MEMBERS of the Okehampton Local History Society have enjoyed a good start to 2008 — with mills and quizzes on the menu. The history society meets on the second Wednesday of every month and are often treated to engaging talks by guest speakers. However, there was no talk in January as the society held its annual lunch at the Tom Cobley Inn in Spreyton. Members said it was a 'most enjoyable' occasion and the meal was delicious. They also took part in a quiz and heard a brief talk from the chair, Dr Jean Shields, on the history of the Ockment Centre. February's meeting took place yesterday (Wednesday), with guest speaker, Martin Watts, delivering a talk on Devon Water Mills. Mr Watts is a professional millwright with more than 35 year's practical experience in running and repairing mills. He has written several books on both water and wind mills and is particularly interested in medieval mills, exploring how topography affects their design and location. The society meets at the Ockment Centre in Okehampton and welcomes new members. Anyone interested should contact secretary, Malcom Francis-Lang on 01837 840158.
