THE week got off to a poor start for Tavistock Short Mat Bowling Club when on Sunday ten members travelled to Ivybridge for their first match in the Devon County ?Tens? competition. They returned home having lost 22-45, after winning only one of the four disciplines that make up the contest. Tavistock player Dave Summers won the ?singles? match 7-4 after winning seven of the ten ends played. Clifford Hicks and Brian Lamb lost the doubles match 5-13 and Liz Percival, Brenda Dennett and Bill Ashe went down 8-10 in the triples game, in spite of a second-half rally which saw them win four of the last six ends played. In the full-ring game, skip Norman Paramor and his team of Anne Summers, Vic Stacey and Marlene Paramor came up against a squad in top form and only managed to win one of the ten ends played, finally ending their match 2-18 losers. Saturday saw four rinks of Tavistock players facing a Tothill team for a home match played in Tavistock College gymnasium. The contest required each side to face two different teams of four opponents for a ten-end game, the total scores being added to produce a final result. The afternoon ended as a 78-68 victory for the visitors after each club won two of the four rinks played. Tavistock skip, Norman Paramor and his squad of Anne Summers, Dennis Smith and Geoff Cork won their first game 8-6, but lost the second 2-11 to finish defeated 10-17 overall. Skip Joan Swift and team of Hazel Lovell, Brian Ellicott and Dorice Hicks went down in both of their encounters (1-19 and 8-10) to finish 9-19 losers. Skip Dave Summers and his squad of Brenda Dennett, Bob Powell-Thomas and Marlene Paramor won both of their games (11-4 and 8-10) to finish with a 23-14 overall winning scoreline. Skip Bill Ashe and his team of Joan Smith, John Dunkeld and Sue Ashe finished the afternoon as 22-18 victors after winning their first game 10-4 and losing their second match 12-14.
