Francis Clark Devon League Second XI B Clyst St George v Tavistock TAVISTOCK travelled to Clyst St George to try to maintain their momentum in climbing the league table. On a damp track and a sunny afternoon Tavistock captain John McGahey lost the toss and was asked to bat on a track that would play better the longer the game went on. Tavistock?s two openers Gliddon and Milligan were both lost cheaply, highlighting the early danger of the damp wicket. Former Cornwall captain Phil Stephens set about establishing a total after the visitors were wavering on 10 for 2. This he did admirably as Tavistock did not lose their next wicket until 67 when John McGahey was caught at the wicket. In came Kaminski followed by Thomas to support Phil Stephens, but both scored few runs. Stephens was eventually dismissed for 63, caught on the boundary. Rich scored an excellent 43 not out and Tavistock eventually closed on 192 for 9. Clyst St George?s innings started reasonably well on a track that was now drying out, offering less assistance for the bowlers. Thomas and Gliddon opened the bowling; Mills took the first wicket with the score on 21, via a superb catch in close. Wickets two and three both fell to Thomas in the same over with the score on 41. The wickets then began to tumble as Clyst seemed not to know whether to play for the draw or bat for an ever unlikely win. Clyst were all out for 127, Matt Mills wrapping up the innings and finishing with figures of 4 for 34 off 11 overs. He was backed up by good bowling and fielding from everyone. Now Tavistock must maintain their impetus to attempt to gain promotion.
