THE winners of the Tavistock Chamber of Commerce annual floral competition received their prizes from Cllr Marjorie Corner, deputy town mayor, recently.
Vice chair of the chamber Kelvin Stagg thanked the many businesses in and around the town which had made so much effort to enhance the area with their floral displays.
'The participants are to be particularly congratulated this year, in view of the difficult weather conditions they have had to contend with,' he said.
Mr Stagg also thanked the judges, who were town mayor Cllr Ken Sanders, Jenny McDowell, the chamber's retailers representative, the vice president of Tavistock Flower Club Nita Keast and Janet Knight, an executive member of the chamber.
This year's winners of category 1, the best display on frontage, baskets, tubs and planters were Robert and Janie White of the Blacksmiths Arms at Lamerton, who were awarded the Plymouth Sound Salver.
The John and Pat Warne plate for the best group display including small enclosure, mini garden or set piece was awarded to Gloria Morrison of The Market Inn.
The chamber of commerce cup for the best use of space was awarded to Tavistock Gas & Stove Centre.
Valerie McCarthy of Greys was awarded the Tavistock Radio Taxis rose bowl for the best shop window display and the seed corn award, initiated by last year's town mayor Cllr Norma Woodcock for the best school or youth group was awarded to Whitchurch Primary School.
