HOPES that Pixon Lane in Tavistock could provide a solution to the town?s parking problems in future years were expressed by West Devon Borough Council officers this week ? despite a move to shelve the scheme by the town council. The town council owns the unmade-up land off Pixon Lane, which is currently leased by Tavistock Livestock Market. Last week, the council decided to reject a move by the borough to sign over the land for ten years ? the borough intended to tarmac over the land at a cost of £25,000 and pay the town 50% of any pay and display income it received over £10,000 a year. Helen Dobby, West Devon?s head of client services, said: ?The figure of £25,000 was only looking at year one of a much longer term scheme that was looking at partnership working for the good of the town. ?The £25,000 was to make up part of the Pixon Lane area, in the knowledge that useage of the car park in the early years would be lower, but before too many years, as we know from useage of car parks in the town now, they are going to be chocca.? Mrs Dobby said over a period of ten years, the borough would consider investing between £100,000 and £125,000 in the Pixon Lane car park scheme. She said the idea of creating a car park in Pixon Lane originated from the Tavistock Parking Focus Group, made up of town, borough and county councillors. ?The town council has said no to this part of the scheme but we are going to continue looking at ways we can improve parking provision in the town,? said Mrs Dobby.
