AN Okehampton youngster who is bidding for paralympic stardom in 2004 received a boost to his training funds recently.

Peter Erickson-Hull, aged 15, was presented with a £500 cheque by the South Devon Sports Association for the Disabled (Golf Society), who were struck with his determination and single-mindedness to represent his country.

Tom Grady of the Sports Association said: 'Strong swimmer though he is, in order to attain paralympic standard Peter needs regular coaching and competition, which of course incurs heavy costs.

'To support Peter, the Association has made an initial grant of £500 to assist this dedicated and uncomplaining character to fulfill his ambition.'

Peter was born with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus — he has been registered blind since he was nine and also has hearing difficulties. Despite his difficulties he has already won a clutch of medals at national level and last October won his first international event in Belgium.

Peter's mother Chrissie said they were delighted with the grant, which would help with travel expenses to galas, which tend to be some distance away.

She said at the moment Peter is sitting his GCSE exams so is not competing.

'He hopes to launch into serious training once they are over,' she said.

'He has also had a lot of support locally, from the Round Table and the Exeter Arms have raised £776, which was wonderful.'
