A PROPOSAL to place bollards along a stretch of pavement in Market Road was given the thumbs down by councillors in Tavistock last week.
The council?s properties committee heard that the developer of the Old Unigate building site in Market Road had been forced to repair paving stones at the Crebers end of the road seven times in 18 months.
Town clerk Roger Howard told councillors the stones had been damaged after lorries, unable to negotiate the road because of parked cars, had stopped on the pavement to unload and their weight had damaged the paving stones.
Although the council owns Market Road, the responsibility for maintenance of the pavement still lay with the developer.
He said the developer wished to install bollards along the pavements, to stop lorries parking on them.
Cllr Brian Trew said bollards might make it impossible for vehicles to negotiate the road properly.
And Cllr Norma Woodcock, town mayor, said she was ?totally against? the idea.
?I think they?re dangerous,? she said.
The comments made by the developer concerning vehicular movements in Market Road have been passed to Devon County Council?s highways department, as the road is covered by the forthcoming traffic orders for Tavistock, due to be published within the next six weeks.
