YELVERTON Golf Club men played their annual Bogey competition, where players aim to 'beat the course' with their net scores. Damian Sanders had a remarkable +6 to take the Lumby Cup and win division two, with Eric Lakey second with +1, beating Mervyn Graygoose on count- back. Division one was won by young Dan Rosevear with +4, beating another Junior member, James Smith +3, with a slightly older club secretary Stewart Barnes in third place. Brian Stone won division 3 + on count-back from Nigel Kowalski, with Andy Trollope taking third place with +1, and Bill Perrott won division four.

The second round of the Plumb Centre South West Winter Foursomes competition was held but only just, as overnight rain had made the course unplayable. After a delay of one hour the competition started in light drizzle, but the greens held up well, and there was some good golf played.

Local boys Jamie Shobrook and Chris Chapman played well to beat Paul Jordan and Pete Cooper (Bigbury) 4 and 3. Tavistock's assistant professional Wayne Basford, with partner Ross Bryant, beat Richard Woods (Bigbury) and Staddon's Andrew Place 2 and 1.

Thurlestone's professional Peter Laugher, and partner Keith Crawford lost to Staddon's Tim Aggett and Rob Sandford 3 and 2. Another professional fell, with Churston's Lester Barnes and Rob Skornia going down to an inspired Yelverton pair of Paul Isaac and Peter Franklin. Home pro Tim McSherry and partner Gary Hawking played well, but could not do enough to beat two Yelverton Juniors who were receiving nine shots — losing 3 and 2.

Tavistock pair Dave Burge and Mike Beveridge had a convincing victory over Staddon's Andrew Eke and Lee West 6 and 5. Reigning champions Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke had a tough match with Bigbury's Tom Ryder and James Mitchell, there only being one hole between the two pairs all day. A birdie three at the 18th sealed the victory after Bridgewater hit his approach to three feet.

Several groups enjoyed the conditions so much they took the match past the 18th hole. Tavistock's Graham Dennis and Sean Kiely beat the Torquay Range professional, Neil Holman and Richard Francis(Churston) on the 19th, and Yelverton's Darren Billing and Ian Apps also needed 19 holes to beat their fellow members Dave Hyslop and Tom Belton. Keith and David Rendell(Staddon) went one better to beat Holsworthy's professional Alan Johnston and partner A Lock, on the 20th.

The final two matches finished in the gloom of an autumn evening, with another two professionals going out, Ian Marshall from the Plymouth Driving Range, and his partner Kayleigh Cann, and Andy Michael from China Fleet Club, with partner Paul Cloke, losing to two Yelverton pairs. This left the field depleted of professionals — of the 17 who entered only four remain, to contest the £1,000 first prize. The third round will be held at Yelverton on Sunday.
