A TOTAL of 19 intrepid athletes from Tavistock AC and many supporters ventured to Bideford on Sunday for the 4th Westward League cross country race. Conditions for the race were dire, with lashing rain and blustering winds. The poor conditions, added to one of the most difficult courses in the league made for a full test of the athletes mettle. Happily, Tavistock runners rose to the occasion and produced some fine performances. First off were the senior women with Carrie Lawson making her cross-country debut for the club, turning in a creditable 36th place and helping the team to challenge for the third place in the league. The under 13 boys are secure in their third team spot, but with an excellent performance by Tom Lawson in second and backed up by Jake Rendle, Nick Champion and Matt McNamara-Waddington - surely they will be challenging for silver! The men?s race had 10 Tavistock athletes and the team dominated the race. Excellent packing of the counting runners with 5 runners in the top 22. Backed by sterling performances by Tony Symons and Chris Eastaugh, also in the top 30, Tavistock can count on moving up from their 5th place in the final analysis.
