THE Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Rev Michael Langrish, visited St Mary the Virgin Church at Walkhampton last week, conducting Sunday worship and enjoying lunch with parishioners at the memorial hall. The normal congregation at St Mary?s was swelled by pupils from Lady Modiford?s School, who assisted in the service with various musical items, and Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from the 1st Walkham Valley groups. The Rev Nick Shutt non-stipendiary curate at Walkhampton said it was a special day for the community as it was the first visit by a bishop to one of their Sunday Services since the early 1960s. ?I was pleased to see the whole community turn out to help us celebrate the Bishop?s visit. ?The Bishop was pleased to see so many children and young people in church and spent lunchtime talking with us and meeting people. ?He was particularly interested in our plans to re-order the west end of the church, to improve our facilities so that the church can continue to serve the community in the 21st century.?
