SHORTLY to celebrate his 92nd birthday Geoff Gill from East Cleave, Sourton could be the oldest volunteer on a Heritage Railway. Geoff (pictured right) joined Dartmoor Railway as a volunteer 10 years ago and has worked in a ticket office, on the information desk at Okehampton Station, and helping out with the bric-a-brac and tombola stalls at weekends. He told the Times: 'I like railways and remember when I used to travel up to London to work in an insurance office when I lived in Croydon. 'They were all steam trains in those days and I miss them.' Geoff now lives on a farm, run by his wife Jill, where they have sheep, a cow and calf and four donkeys. In 1935 Geoff joined the Royal Corps of Signals and was demobbed in 1946. During that time he became a sergeant instructor in radio operation and was based in Huddersfield with the 3rd Signal Training Centre. He is a member of the Cornwall branch of the Royal Signals Association. Geoff has travelled all over the country visiting other heritage lines and is passionate about the restoration of rolling stock, and especially steam engines.
