A TAVISTOCK nursing home that provides care for people with complex needs is celebrating after receiving a strong report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Chollacott House, on Whitchurch Road, was delighted to hear the good news this week after only last year receiving a damming report by CQC that the home ‘requires improvement‘ due to breaches of regulations.

Chollacott House, part of the Stonehaven Care Group, was awarded a ‘good’ report for all aspects of the inspection, carried out in June.

The home provides nursing and personal care, as well as care for people convalescing or needing a short period of respite or day care, as well as people needing end of life care.

Part of Chollacott House is home to the state-of-the-art wing the, Drake Unit, which specialises in complex needs including Huntington’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease and a specialist neuro-nursing unit.

Inspectors said: ‘At the last inspection in November 2016 we found improvements were needed to ensure the systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of the service provided were fully effective. We took enforcement action, which required the provider to submit monthly reports on the actions that have been taken to ensure people were safe and appropriate care and support was provided.

‘Monthly reports were received by the CQC, which demonstrated action had been taken to reduce the risk of unsafe areas and treatment.’

During the 2017 inspection, CQC observed that the service ‘promoted a positive culture’ and stated that staff were kind and caring and knew residents well, maintaining positive relationships between residents and all members of the staff team.

There was a programme of activities as well as trips out which were enjoyed by the residents who were treated with dignity and respect and staff were mindful to protect resident’s privacy.

CQC also found that people were positive about their experience of living at Chollacott. They said they ‘felt safe and liked the staff’ and relatives also spoke highly of the staff and care provided to their family member.

A recent short-stay resident at Chollacott House said: ‘The staff are amazing. They have helped me with my ability and confidence, staff work really hard and are very caring.’

Nathan Stone, service development director at Stonehaven, said: ‘We’re all delighted to see Chollacott House awarded the 5 / 5 good ratings that our care team deserves following their most recent CQC Inspection. We know from our experiences of visiting Chollacott House over the years that it’s a great care home, with a great care team and really happy and well looked after residents and family members.

‘We’re really proud of our Chollacott House team, we thank them for this fantastic result and we look forward to continuing to support them.’
