FIREFIGHTERS battled a large blaze at a farm building between Buckland Filleigh and Shebbear for six hours overnight last Thursday. Hatherleigh fire crew was initially called to the incident which was reported at around 10.30pm. They were joined at the scene by two crews from Okehampton and crews from Holsworthy, Hartland and Chumleigh, and were there until 4.45am on Friday. The farm building and its contents, including four tractors and other farm machinery, was completely gutted. Three cattle in an adjoining shed were killed and another had to be put down by a vet. A water bowser had to be deployed and firefighters used breathing apparatus, hosereels and jets to bring the blaze under control. The Salvation Army also attended the scene and Hatherleigh firefighter Owen Ravenscroft thanked them for their assistance. l A kitchen in Halwill Junction was damaged after a cooker fire last Thursday. The cooker caught fire at around 5pm and fire crews from Hatherleigh and Holsworthy were called to the incident. Four firefighters wore breathing apparatus and a hosereel was used to contain the fire to the kitchen and extinguish it. The kitchen was fire-damaged and other downstairs rooms suffered some minor smoke damage. l A chimney fire at a house in Meeth was tackled by Hatherleigh firefigthers last Monday week. Firefighters used special equipment for chimney fires as well as hose reels and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the flames. Hatherleigh?s crew was called out at 10.30am and were at the property for around two hours.
