POLICE in Tavistock this week warned householders to be wary of workmen in the area going door to door, offering to carry out tarmac work for driveways.
Police say the men are making the suggestion they are working with highways and have an excess amount of tarmac left over, which they offer at a discounted rate.
A spokesman said: 'Invariably, they will charge large amounts of money for the work, which is below standard.
'Should you be called on, please contact police with any details, especially vehicle registrations — it is not unknown for vehicles to be falsely labelled with signs such as "Motorway Maintenance" or "Highways".
'If in doubt ask for identification and phone any contact numbers contained on them to check the validity.'
