FOR all of those people of Tavistock who enjoy the facilities of the Alexander Centre, I write regarding the quoted response from Devon County Councillor Debo Sellis regarding the car parking proposal (Times, August 2).
I cannot agree with Cllr Sellis' published reasons for supporting the parking proposal being to the benefit of the bowls and tennis club members; to benefit Harewood House and because the core strategy requires additional parking.
There is ample parking for the bowls and tennis club in the nearby vast West Devon Borough Council public car park at the Wharf and Bedford car parks. Harewood House, next door but one, has more than sufficient land to extend visitors' car park if they so desired. And the core strategy 750 house development on the outskirts of Tavistock is over a mile away from the Alexander Centre!
Instead of penalising the Alexander Centre, I would ask Devon County Council to investigate the better management of 'on-road' parking spaces in Plymouth Road.
This could free up 'on-road' parking which could benefit the bowls and tennis club without adversely affecting the community learning centre.
There are approximately 50 unrestricted parking spaces along Plymouth Road from the Alexander Centre to the bus station. These spaces are always full during the day with little turnover but by night they are empty. This would seem to suggest that Plymouth Road is being used for all-day parking.
