East Cornwall League Premier division
Bere Alston United 3
Wadebridge Town 0
BERE Alston got back to winning ways and in doing so recorded a league double over their visitors in what turned out to be a more comfortable victory than expected, despite playing for nearly an hour with only ten men.
Bere started brightly with Nick Aplin, Mike Curtis and Dan Follett (twice), all going close, but it was not until the 20th minute that their pressure brought it's first reward when, from a long Sam Martin goal kick, Nick Aplin set up Aaron Rockey for a crisp finish low into the bottom corner to open the scoring.
With Bere's defence coping comfortably with the Wadebridge attacks, and their midfield in total control it was no surprise that Dan Follett added a second on the half hour when he anticipated a poor back pass and nipped in to lob the stranded Wadebridge keeper.
Bere were then dealt a blow when Aaron Rockey, who up to that moment had been in fine form, was red carded for abusive language as the home side battled to hold on to their 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Manager Kevin Taylor had to reshuffle his pack with Dan Follett and Mike Curtis dropping into midfield and Nick Aplin left up front as Wadebridge set about trying to take advantage of the extra man at the beginning of the second half.
However, despite a lot of possession Wadebridge were finding the Bere back four a hard nut to crack with Mark Wheeler and Jason Clancy, in particular, in superb form.
Bere, though, looked the more dangerous on the break and were unfortunate to be denied a penalty when Will Westlake looked to be brought down by the Wadebridge keeper only to be given offside.
With 20 minutes to go Will Westlake and Darren Smalley were replaced by Lee Howells and Steve Piper respectively and the two substitutes combined on the right flank before Piper set up Nick Aplin for a stunning finish from 20 yards for Bere's third and effectively kill the game.
Sam Martin did pull off one outstanding save from a Wadebridge free kick on the closing minutes, but in the end Bere ran out comfortable winners.
